Line Marking Paint & Powder

Line marking paint is used to produce the markings on a number of sports and amenity surfaces. It can be used on grass, asphalt and other hard surfaces where lines are required. Areas where line marking paint might be used include football and rugby pitches, cricket squares, tennis courts, playgrounds, basketball courts and car parks.

Line marking products can be made from a concentrated liquid paint, or a powder.

Some line marking paint contain the herbicide glyphosate, which serves as a grass suppressant at the same time as forming a line.

Initially a line marking paint will be used at the beginning of the season, around August time. How often a pitch or court is over-marked varies with usage and conditions, but generally speaking over-marking will be around every fortnight.

Line Marking Paint vs Line Marking Powder

The two different ways of producing line markings are with powder and paint. There are advantages and disadvantages with both methods and what is right for one club/ground may not be for another.

Line marking powder can be more cost effective. You can select how much water to mix the powder with depending on conditions. Or it can be used as a dry powder in extremely muddy conditions.

Line marking paint can be easier to store and less messy to apply. Some line marking paints can come ready mixed for ease of use. Some paints contain glyphosate to supress grass growth and make the line last longer.

Concentrated Line Marking Paint

A concentrated line marking paint has had water removed from it, thus weighing less and being of lower volume than a non-concentrated paint. Benefits of the user adding their own water could be that it is a more cost effective way of marking lines and is easier to store.

Line Marking Paint containing Glyphosate

Rigby Taylor sells the only MAPP approved white line marking paint containing the herbicide glyphosate. This suppresses the grass plants where the paint has been applied, effectively meaning that lines stay visible for longer and less visits are needed for over marking.
