Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris)

Selfheal

A perennial weed, selfheal has purple flowers atop hairy stems, with oval leaves branching off in pairs. The square stem is indicative of it being a member of the mint family. It flowers from June to October.

Selfheal can be problematic in turfgrass because it grows very low to the ground, and so often avoids the mower blades.

The name selfheal derives from the plant’s historical usage as a medicine to treat wounds.

Treatment

Close mowing will remove flower heads, but to rid turf of it completely either dig up the plant, including the roots, or use Crossbar , which is effective in removing selfheal .
