Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata)

Ribwort Plantain

The perennial, ribwort plantain , is widespread throughout the UK in a number of soil types and although being quite resistant to drought, is not to waterlogging. It flowers from April until whenever the frosty weather arrives in the autumn. Brown/green flower heads with white anthers sit atop hairy stalks, which are leafless.

There are a number of sub-species of ribwort plantain and it can often live for over 10 years. Most of the flowers develop in June/July and ribwort plantain is grazed by rabbits and attacked by a range of insects.

Treatment

Aerate often and maintain a thick sward to prevent ribwort plantain establishing. If removing by hand, ensure roots are fully taken out. Use  Greenor to control if necessary.
