Results of the Rigby Taylor Golf Tournament Final

The finals day of the golf tournament organised by Rigby Taylor and BIGGA took place last Friday, 16 September, at Greenmeadow Golf & Country Club, in South Wales.

In the morning, closely fought semi-finals were played as a Stableford competition with one player from each team placed in a fourball. The team points were then added together at the end to determine who would make it to the afternoon final.

Rigby Taylor representatives, David Carvey and Peter Griffiths were there to start the tournament and walked around with the competitors during the play.

The finalists were: Steve Chappell (of Neath GC) and Darryl Jones (of Glyn-neath GC) vs Paul Handy and Mark Anderton (both of Newport GC).

After lunch Steve and Darryl got off to a blistering start in the final, going 3 up after three holes. Paul and Mark pulled 2 holes back, but by the time the players reached the 13th tee, Steve and Darryl were feeling confident at being 5 up.

This confidence was short-lived, however, as Paul and Mark won the next three holes in succession to bring the score to 2 up with three to play.

A tense 16th hole was halved, as was the 17th, meaning Steve and Darryl were the victorious team with a score of 2&1.

As well as being crowned the Rigby Taylor Matchplay Knockout champions of 2011, they were also presented with the Rigby Taylor Rosebowl.

The 'longest drive' was won by Darryl on the 18th and the 'nearest the pin' prize was won by Steve on hole 11, with a bonus prize of Titleist Pro V1 balls handed to Mark for hitting the flagstick!

Steve Chappell said: "It was enjoyable and the course was in very good condition. The match was an extremely exciting one to be involved in and credit must go to Paul and Mark for their spirited fight back."

"Great thanks to the Rigby Taylor team, of David, Peter and Roy Barker, for their continued support of the competition in our section."
